Kilgravin Lodge had a positive sale despite Sales figures showing that this years sale was overall tougher than last years.
We had a good clearance rate of 74%, well above the sale clearance rate of 59%, this gave us a total aggregate of $893,000.00. The average selling price for horses in our draft was $63,786.00 and our top lot was sold for $180,000.00. These results ensured that we were placed 3rd on the Leading Vendors by Aggregate list.
We would like to thank all our owners for their support and like to wish the respective purchasers all the best with their new investments.Kilgravin Lodge has come a long way since its two horse inception at 2003's New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale of 2YO's
This year, Eion and Megan Kemp’s Matamata operation will present 20 quality individuals at the sale's 2010 edition, to be held on the 16th and 17th of November (see draft below).
“It’s one of our best drafts,” said Eion.
“Right through, they tend to be by good commercial stallions, and they are all reasonably nice types, who have had a strong foundation laid to their careers ahead.”

Kilgravin Lodge's lot 207 - Pure Theatre x Burnham Wood
|
Established eight years ago, Kilgravin Lodge offers a professional breaking, pre-training and agistment service that extends from weanling preparation through to racing readiness.
In 2003, they added Ready To Run preparation to their service list, albeit accidentally.
“We were rung two weeks before the sale and asked to prepare two horses. It was very last minute,” recalled Eion.
It would be an inauspicious start, as the two horses passed in for $4000 and $2,500 respectively.
In a case of 'if at first you don't succeed, try and try again', they returned with three the next year for a hugely improved average of $26,000.
In 2005 - their third year, they trucked north with 13 horses and gave notice to being a vendor of some repute with the sale of a $ 250,000 Fusaichi Pegasus colt.
“It’s only really been in the last five years, that we have become serious about being a vendor,” said Eion.
Interestingly, whilst the $250,000 sale was certainly a very pleasing outcome for Kilgravin Lodge, it is not their be all and end all result.
“The biggest buzz for us is when we sell clients horses for good results, after all the hardwork that's been put in," reflected Eion.

All roads lead to Karaka next month for Kilgravin Lodge as their grand final looms with a quality consignment of young talent bound for the auction ring. The NZB Ready To Run Sale on November 16 and 17 has become the most significant event on the Matamata operation’s calendar.“Everything we do during the year is aimed at this sale and we’ve become even more focussed on it in recent times,” principal Eion Kemp said.
“We have a very good and loyal client base and they put all their trust in us and we’re very appreciative of that.“We’ve purposefully bought horses throughout Australia and New Zealand for this sale.
“We’re genuine and realistic vendors and it’s about turning them over so we’re very much there to sell.”
Established eight years ago, Kilgravin Lodge’s reputation as a centre of excellence has steadily grown with graduates making their mark across Australasia and Asia.
Those to have come through the system include Gr. 1 winners Jessicabeel (Sydney Cup), Fully Fledged (Ford Diamond Stakes), Floral Pegasus (Hong Kong Classic Mile, Chinese Club Challenge Cup) and Green Birdie (Singapore KrisFlyer Sprint).Guillotine (Gr. 2 Feehan Stakes), dual stakes-winner Gorky Park, the talented Singapore galloper Protege and the progressive Fantastic Jaw have been other high-profile performers.Kilgravin, which also breaks in more than 120 horses a year as well as pre-training and agistment services, has steadily increased its presence at the RTR Sale.
This year’s draft features an impressive cross-section of two-year-olds representing Australasia’s most commercial sire lines.
Kemp nominated Lot 207, a gelded son of the Nureyev stallion Pure Theatre, as one of their premier offerings.
“He’s an outstanding individual,” he said. “He’ll suit Hong Kong or Singapore and looks like a real Derby type of horse.”
A Volksraad colt (Lot 70) from the prolific Gr. 1 family of Solveig (NZ Oaks, DB 1600), Gallic (Sydney Cup), Culminate (Otaki-Maori WFA), Captivate (NZ Breeders’ Stakes) and Eileen Dubh (Levin Classic) is very much in the mould of his champion sire.
“He’s a typical Volksraad and he’s progressed really well throughout the year and developed into a smart type with ability,” Kemp said.
“The Shinko King (Lot 110) is another nice, strong fellow with a good attitude who does everything right.”Kemp said the Australian-bred Oratorio colt (Lot 289) was a lovely horse with speed to burn while the O’Reilly-The Wake colt (Lot 109) was another cracking prospect.Lot 388 is a chestnut son of No Excuse Needed and the O’Reilly mare Liliane and represents the Waikato Stud cross that has already produced mulpti Group 1 winners Daffodil and stakes-winners Masquerade and Takeanotherchance.
The consignment will further feature sons of Savabeel, Thorn Park, Dubai Destination, Lucky Unicorn, Darci Brahma, Dehere, Fast ‘N’ Famous, One Cool Cat, Ishiguru and Keeninsky with the draft completed by a daughter of Lucky Unicorn.
Originally from Wanganui – where his father held an owner-trainer’s licence – Kemp rode trackwork while at school and success followed as an amateur rider with victory in the much sought-after Duke of Gloucester Cup.
He subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and a diploma in Horse Business Management from Australia’s Marcus Oldham College. His academic qualifications were then complemented by valuable practical experience at Cambridge and Waikato Studs, Watson Bloodstock, Antrim Lodge and with well-known Matamata horseman Paul Jenkins.Since branching out in their own right, Kemp and wife Megan have significantly developed the 75-acre Kilgravin Lodge.
The complex now features a purpose-built barn housing 23 boxes with 26 day yards, spelling paddocks, a 750 metre sand track with starting gates, a covered horse walker and a high-walled lunging arena
The fastest two breeze up times were provided by Kilgravin Lodge with Lot 303 a bay colt by Ishiguru from Glee Club stopping the clock in 10.08 seconds, followed by Lot 89 a chestnut colt by Thorn Park from Summertime Angel stopping the clock at 10.11 seconds. These were the quickest times over the two days.
Other Kilgravin Lodge stand outs were Lot 207 a bay gelding by Pure Theatre from Burnham Wood running 10.60 seconds, Lot 215 a bay colt by Dehere from Cautious Mission stopping the clock at 10.59 seconds and Lot 70 a bay colt by Volksraad from Sonoma clocking 10.57 seconds.
