After settling the dual Gr.1 placegetter in eighth, jockey Opie Bosson pulled the talented six-year-old gelding into the clear upon straightening, and with momentum gathered, put paid to all others 100m from home. At the post, Mr Tipsy (NZ) officially held a 1 ¼ margin over Can’t Keeper Down (NZ) (Keeper),with He’s Under The Gun (NZ) (Zabeel) filling third a nose away. Duly delighted with the 2:13.74 Good track outing over 2200m was conditioner, Bjorn Baker. “We are thrilled to have him back," said Bjorn. “He’s had a few issues, but when he’s right, he is a top class horse. “The best thing about his win though, is there is no re-handicap for the Wellington Cup.” Following Mr Tipsy’s intended start in the Gr.2 Wellington Cup (2400m) at Trentham on January 25, Baker said it was possible that a tilt at the Hobart Cup (2200m) on February 13 and the Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 23 could be made. “The Wellington Cup is what we are focusing on, but once through that, we’ll decide whether to proceed with this or not,” he said. Mr Tipsy (NZ) has won $473,133 in stakes money for owner Scott Richardson, with important outings beyond his eight wins including Gr.1 placings over two miles in the Sydney and Auckland Cup. “He’s a great horse to have around. He’s so quiet and has a wonderful temperament. He’s a real stable favourite,” Bjorn said. Don’t ask my who gave him the name, but around the stable he is called ‘Bobo’. Mr Tipsy (NZ) came to be owned by Richardson after Colin Jillings concluded the bidding process for the Windsor Park consignee at 2006’s NZB Premier Yearling Sale with a nod of $41,000 . Richardson – who owns Flemington Farm in Matamata’s as one of the divisions of Scott Richardson Bloodstock Ltd, has previously been involved with such black-type racehorses as Fiorenza, Stolen Thunder, Magic Man, Just Anything and Noble Chant. Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Mr Tipsy (NZ) is by the champion sire Montjeu and is from the Casual Lies mare, Fairy Tipsy, who was a well related Gr.2 performer on the track. The mare hails directly from the Gr.1 family of Boardwalk Angel and Coogee Walk and will notably be represented by a High Chaparral filly at the Premier Yearling Sale on January 31. |
