Mercury Mistress's only start in the Southern Filly of the Year series resulted in a dominant win in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes over 1600m on the 10th April. Raced by the Burnet and Jackson families the 3 year old filly by No Excuse Needed out of the Centaine mare Flytaine lead for most of the race crossing the line
3/4 length in front of Champaign Joy and a further
1 1/2 lengths from The Beekeeper who finished 3rd.
The Southern Filly series is made up of 4 listed races run between September and April ranging in distance from 1200m to 2000m. The first, second and third fillies home are awarded 7 points, 3 points and 1 point respectively with the winner of the series accumulating the most points throughout the duration.
The final race in the series was the Warstep Stakes on 24th April with Mercury Mistress being the only runner of 3 fillies jointly tied on 7 points to remain in the field at acceptances time. Previous to this her only run over a distance of 2000m was in the NZB Royal Stakes at Ellerlie when she finished 5th behind Adaline and Katie Lee. The weather conditions on Saturday were a god-send to the local farmers but not idea for racing and a down-grade in the track meant that it was going to be a tough ask for most of the fillies in the race. Although she put in a top effort and gamely contested the lead on the turn it was just too much to ask from her. Completing the series on 7 points Mercury Mistress retained her position as joint winner providing her connections with a huge thrill and a great achievement.
Mercury Mistress was broken in and pre-trained at Kilgravin Lodge for Lance Noble and long time clients the Burnet and Jackson families.
